Heian Literature and Resources for Reinactors

This is a list of resources for information on Heian culture and practices. The sites on here are posted with permission of the moderator, but the focus is going to be primarily on books and period works.

Below is a list of books, starting with period works, working to modern informational Books and working on to websites.

Period Works

The Tale of Genji by Murasaki Shikibu- this is an absolutely essential read for Heian reinactors. One can really get a feel for the elegant nature of society.

The Pillow Book by Sei Shonagon- this book documents the courtly life under Empress Tashi

Nyobu no Shozoko no Iro by Minamoto Masasuke- List of the Kasane no Irome listed for  the Empress Tashi... I have only been able to find it in Japanese so far, unfortunately.

Modern Informational Books

Kimono: Fashioning Culture by Liza Crihfield Dalby- this book is a must have for reinactors. Clearly displays some of the Kasane no Irome.

Japanese Costume and the Makers of it's Elegant Tradition by Helen Benton Minnich- This book is out of print (the last copywright was dated 1963) but it is a wealth of knowledge if you can find it.

Japanese Culture byt Paul Varley
